February is Pet Dental Health Month!

Nearly 85% of all dogs and cats have some form of periodontal disease. This progressive and sometimes painful disease can lead to other problems with your pet; chronic infections can spread to the heart, liver, lungs and kidneys. The Animal Hospital of Streamwood can address your pet’s periodontal disease. Starting with a thorough examination and consultation, our knowledgeable and experienced health care team can provide necessary cleanings, periodontal therapies, or oral surgeries that your pet may require. Please call our hospital and speak with one of our professional team members for more information.

It’s So Much More Than "Just a Cleaning"
Look at What’s Included!

Pre-anesthetic Evaluation Exam
Complete examination by a Doctor on the morning of the procedure.
Surgical Fluid Support
IV Catheter is placed into a main vein to administer preoperative sedation and medications. IV fluids are administered throughout the procedure; this supports the body functions in stabilizing the heart rate and blood pressure, flushing the anesthesia out of the system and hydrates the body from pre-anesthetic fasting.
Analgesic Injections (Pain Control)
A pre-procedure medication to prevent pain, relax the patient, and relieve anxiety about being hospitalized. Also lowers heart rate and blood pressure. This is the best way to go under anesthesia, in a nice calm state.
Dental Inhalant Anesthesia
We use Sevoflorane, the safest, most gentle anesthesia, even used in human medicine.
Patient Monitoring and Recovery
An Animal Health Technician trained in anesthesia monitors your pet’s heart rate, breathing, blood pressure, anesthesia levels, and body’s temperature constantly and charts it every five minutes while your pet is under anesthesia.
Monitoring continues throughout recovery until your pet is awake, aware and ready to go home.
Dental Exam and Periodontal Therapy
The health of every tooth and the gums are evaluated using a probe, just like your dentist, for the presence of periodontal disease.
All tartar and plaque is removed from each and every tooth and sub gingival (under) the gum line.
Teeth that have advanced periodontal disease and can’t be saved are removed.
Dental Nerve Block
If a tooth needs to be removed a nerve block is done with Marcaine. This numbs the location much like Novocain.
Sometimes Consil, a synthetic bone graft or Doxirobe, an antibiotic gel is used to aid in healing gum tissue.
With advanced gum disease, gum surgery is performed to remove all infected tissue, allowing new tissue to regrow.
Polishing
All teeth are then polished to remove any surface imperfections on the enamel and a fluoride treatment is applied.
Nail Trim-Pedicure!
Courtesy nail trim, nice and short while they’re sleeping.
New Toothbrush and Paste
Everybody gets a new toothbrush when they visit the dentist to get you started on a new daily homecare program.
Surgical Progress Exam
Follow-up appointment to check healing of periodontal treatments.
At Home
Slow introduction of daily brushing is key to maintaining healthy teeth and gums.
Don’t get discouraged!
